I substituted first grade today and on Wednesday also, and let me tell you, the measly amount they pay is NOT WORTH IT. I don't like kids. Not at all. Not even a little bit. Today I told one kid to sit down in his seat at least 200 times. I'm not exaggerating. That's not the worst of it though... there was a kid who literally threw a raving sobbing throwing-things tantrum about every 5 minutes. It would be because I didn't do something exactly the way that he thought I should.
For example, I picked up a red marker...
"YOU CAN'T USE THE RED MARKER!! MRS. C. USES THE BLACK MARKER!!! AHHHH!" I would say, "Well, I don't see the black marker, so we are using the red marker today." SOB, THROW PENCIL ACROSS THE ROOM, SCREAM, PUT HEAD ON DESK...
Here was another fun one: we had to go over spelling words. Apparently the day before they learned "ee" words. That day (Wednesday) we learned "ea" words. I start writing them on the board. "THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO BE "EE"!!!!" Me: "No, some words are spelled with "ee", some with "ea". These today are "ea" words." "NOOOOOO, THEY. ARE. EE!!!" "I'm sorry, but I can't change the spelling. This is what they are, and these are the words I'm supposed to teach you." SOB, THROW PENCIL ACROSS THE ROOM, TEAR PAPER IN HALF, SOB ON THE DESK FOR AN HOUR. Can we say issues???
Speaking of issues... there's a girl in the class who has been bounced from first grade to first grade because nobody can handle her. EVERY thing I told her to do she would ignore me. Then when I talked right to her face, she'd roll her eyes and say, "Oh my gaaawwwd". Every single time. Then she would tell all the other kids to shut up and swear at them. She kept moving her desk where she wasn't supposed to go, ripping up other kids' charts, and every recess a different adult would come in and tell me that she had done something bad. Wednesday I took her to the principal's office finally, because I couldn't get one thing done in class. Today.... here it is... I threw my temper tantrum...
I got up in that little snot's face and told her that I would NOT take ANY of her CRAP today, so she better cut it out RIGHT NOW. She said, "I'm going to tell my mom." I said "Good, tell your mom that you're being disobedient and not listening to your teacher." Then she said, "I'm going to tell the principal." And I said, "GO, tell her right now. Go right ahead. Tell her that you're disrupting the class." So, she.... yes, you guessed it. Rolled her eyes and said "Oh my gaaaawwwd."
I hate kids.

would you believe i have two sweet sisters-in-law who CHOSE to teach 1st graders? really i'm serious! i'm sorry that you had bad days...it makes you more grateful for your own kids though, eh?:D
my mom is doing silver sneakers and she said that you were sick the other day...are you feeling better?
I bet you wanted to strangle those two. No wonder the teacher was gone. Hope you have a better weekend.
Ha ha ha! I'm sorry, Mindy. I'm sure it wasn't funny for you. But i needed a good laugh today and you came through for me. You certainly have a way with words... :0)
Reading your post made me think of when I substitute taught at my dad's school in Missouri about once a week for a couple months right before my mission. I think I taught each grade (1st-5th) and an art class, and at the end of each of those days, I had a headache. I guess it's a little extra money, though... but is it really worth it? :-)
Being one of those that made the decision to be a teacher I have to say that you always have a couple in each class. They are your daily challenge. I'm going to say the little boy probably had some disabilities. That is some pretty classic behaviors. The little girl just needs an attitude adjustment. :)
Good for you for making it through the day! I hate subbing, but teaching is a wonderful profession. Now teaching aerobics is another story. :)
and as a high school teacher I can say they still do that in 12th grade
Holy cow! What are those parents teaching {or not teaching} their own children? Kids pick up on anything and everything--even bad behavior.
Think of it as another notch in your belt towards heaven! You lasted WAY longer than I would have!!!! Good job! I bet you slept well at night?! The saddest part is what's making this little girl do what she does. It won't get any easier for her. So sad. :( I think you did GREAT!!!!!
This is SO the kind of thing that made me switch my major in college while I was subbing to get through school. :) Sorry you had a bum day! Way to stand up to the girl though...I would have had a fit too...
Yikes! Hang in there and you deserve a hot bath and some cocoa!
Allston is never going to public school. I can't believe first graders talk like that.
That is tooo funny!!
When I was subbing I was framed by an evil principal and her "henchmen" teachers for parking in the wrong spot. They claimed that because I parked in the wrong spot one of the "grandma helpers" had to park further away and slipped and broke her ankle. It was seriously like a witch trail (except the witches were on the WRONG side of the bench :))
Subs need to be paid more cause they deal with all the crap from BOTH sides LOL
You could not pay me enough to substitute teach. I couldn't agree with you more. I don't know how people deal with that day in and day out. Kudos to you for trying.
Oh Melindy! You made these crappy days sound so funny. Thanks for the laugh. I have been having flashbacks to my subbing days. Although, I have to say, I never had a day as bad as these sound. Haha. "Ohh my Gaaaaaawwwwd" hahah. I would have boxed her ears and gone to jail. It'd be worth it.
