Feels So Good!

I've been running more the past couple of weeks, thanks to early morning running appointments with Janice, and it has been great! Too bad Janice is moving next week. :( I'll have to get out of bed without the motivation of knowing someone is waiting for me! Anyway, the last run we ran about 5.5, and I felt GOOD at the end... like I wanted to sprint it... like I haven't felt for a long time. When I'm doing good with my running, and my body is really loving and craving it, I get this kick at the end of every run... like my legs are going of their own volition, and the rest of my body is just along for the ride. So, I felt that again! I also used to get tingles in my legs when I was laying in bed before I'd get up for my long runs, like my legs knew what was coming and couldn't wait. Hopefully that comes back too, and I might not need Janice after all!

Wow, I thought you had been a life time runner. It gave me a boost to know that you started only a few years ago. I am LOVING it lots. I have two gals I go with daily...it helps us lots! I am actually quite addicted now-I read articles constantly on running.

How long did it take you to get used to running over five miles? Did you get shin splints? I got shin splints after just walking two miles. Do shoes, vitamins, and/or stretching make a difference?

Melissa, I built up to the 5 miles... probably a couple of months, but I started from being pretty fit (workouts at the gym and such). Just take it slow, and don't add more than 10% more miles each week.

I have had shin splints before, but not much... SHOES DO make a difference! They need to be the right kind of shoe for your type of foot, and not be too worn out. They kind of cost a lot, but I figure it's a lot cheaper than a gym membership! I don't know about vitamins, since I don't take them. They might help. I think eating healthy helps too. I'm not great at stretching... I never stretch before a run... I just start running straight out the door, but I try to do some stretching after.

Check out runnersworld.com. I'm sure you can find lots of advice on shin splints, shoes, stretching... and everything! I'd love to help you with whatever else I can, too!
