High School
I subbed again at the High School today. It was rough. I read 1/2 a book. One class made up missed assignments, the next one played Monopoly, and then it was prep period, then the last two classes did worksheets. When I went to the substitute training, the girl next to me freaked out a little when I marked that I would sub at the High School. She said she was way too scared to do that. Well, I'll just keep this little secret that High School is SO MUCH easier than Elementary School that it's laughable. I can come home exhausted, sick of kids, and sometimes with strep, or I can come home having sat there all day reading a book. Hmmm.... I might have to think about that one for, oh, a nanosecond! Oh, and I actually LIKE High School kids. I can't say the same for Elementary kids. (Except my own, of course!) Okay, maybe that's a bit harsh. I can enjoy Elementary age kids at times, when they're not tattling, sticking things up their nose, putting glue on each other's chairs, crying, throwing things...

I used to be a sub teacher--and I MUCH preferred high school to elementary. WAY more laid back!! Sure--rough teenagers at times, but overall it was way more relaxed (and better pay) than the little kids--elementary to me was like getting paid a couple dollars an hour to watch 26 rowdy children at once. Yuck!
yeah don't ever stick me as a elementary teacher i will take highschool (and yw) over gradeschool, elementary (and primary!) i think that might change when i have older kids and then i'll be wanting the little kids again, for now all i can handle is my own, and i'm not doing that very well either!
So what book did you read 1/2 of? That's the important part.
you were brave to even try elementary. 26 kids is too many kids for 1 adult!
i totally agree with the high school thing...my teenager is way easier than my little ones.
I loved subbing!! And you are right, HS is way easier. Except some of those boys were HUGE and that did intimidate me a little. Subbing for elementary sure puts you through the wringer, but I probably laughed the hardest there. My fave was Middle School, I know-weird but I loved those kids, especially the boys. The saddest thing? I actually miss it! (I know, my hubby things I'm nuts, too!) :)
I used to sub, too, but only at the middle and high school level. Of course, I thought I was going to be a high school English teacher, but I got married and started having babies, and teaching in the schools didn't seem so important anymore. Anyway, I totally agree with you that HS is easier, and I do love teenagers, rotten as they can be!
all i have to go on is my primary calling vs. young women's calling. i would prefer primary any day. i volunteer in both of my elementary kids' classes every week (in know not the same as all day) but i adore those kids. remind me not to have any of you tend my little darlings...sheesh!
